In 1974, Marvel (under their sister imprint Curtiss Magazines) was publishing several black and white horror/monster comic magazines. One of the more successful was DRACULA LIVES!, featuring tales of the Lord of Vampires set both in the present and the past. Starting with issue #5, Roy Thomas and Dick Giordano began what they intended to be the definitive comics adaptation of Bram Stoker's classic 1897 novel, "Dracula". Six installments were published before declining sales led to the cancellation of DRACULA LIVES! In 1975, Marvel attempted to consolidate all their black and white horror magazines into a single publication titled THE LEGION OF MONSTERS, providing a venue for the continuation of "Dracula", but low sales prevented the series from going beyond a single issue. Several discussions about continuing the adaptation were held over the years, but no progress was made.

Finally, in 2004, editor Mark D. Beazley contacted Thomas and Giordano, and the complete adaption was scheduled to be both reprinted and completed in a high-quality four-issue limited series, STOKER'S DRACULA.
