The first original Ghost Rider (Carter Slade), as published by Marvel Comics, was a Western hero. His name was changed to Night Rider (and later to Phantom Rider) after the name Ghost Rider was given to Johnny Blaze, the motorcycle stuntman.
Note: The 1st volume was published by Magazine Enterprises & was an entirely different character (Rex Fury).
