Creation

Beholders are one of the most classic Dungeons & Dragons monsters, appearing in every edition of the game since 1975. Unlike many of the other D&D monsters, the Beholder is a wholly original creation not based on any preceding creature from mythology or other works of fiction. Rob Kuntz's brother Theron O. Kuntz created the Beholder, and Gary Gygax detailed it for publication. Beholders are one of the few classic D&D monsters that Wizards of the Coast claims as Product Identity.
