The term gnome was coined by the alchemist Paracelsus (1493-1541) to define earth elementals. The name literally means "earth-dweller". The gnomes eventually entered the realm of folklore and literature. Taking the chthonic qualities of guardians of mines and underground treasures. They were also connected to other aspects of their element, such as the growth of vegetation. Making them beneficial to farmers and gardeners.
