Origin
According to John Constantine, The BrujerÃa were a secret order of male witches whose origins traces back many hundred of years to the forests of Patagonia in South America. The Brujeria themselves claim to have existed before the light of creation.
Creation
They were created by Alan Moore first appearing in Swamp Thing #46.
They are based off the real world South American Brujeria found in Argentina and Chile. The word "Brujo" or "Bruja" can refer to male or female witches respectively.
Major Story Arcs
Swamp Thing: American Gothic
The Brujeria are the ancient being responsible for the ominous rising darkness happening across the United States, causing supernatural and evil entities to emerge in twisted ways and on a scale previously unseen. They also create the Invunche, a disfigured demon that kills the friends of John Constantine.
John Constantine and Swamp Thing travel to South America to confront them, where they reveal their plan to bring back the darkness tat existed before creation in order to destroy Heaven.

Much of the first season of NBC's Constantine series is loosely adapted from American Gothic, including the increase in supernatural occurrences within the United States. In episode 8, John discovers that the Brujeria are responsible.
