The Doctor's companions have assumed a variety of roles like; being an involuntary passengers, assistants, friends, or fellow adventurers. Being a Time Lord the Doctor can live a long time due to his regeneration he regularly gains new companions and loses old ones. Sometimes they return home, and find a new causes, or falls in love. There have however been a few companions have died during their travels with the Doctor.
