Jill Thompson is a graduate of Chicago’s American Academy of Art, and is married to writer, Brian Azzarello, creator of 100 Bullets. Best known for her artwork on Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series, she has also illustrated Wonder Woman, Swamp Thing and The Invisibles. In issue #40 of Sandman, “The Parliament of Rooks,” Thompson created the characters of Li’l Death and Li’l Morpheus based on the classic comic book characters, Sugar and Spike. These two “Little Endless” children went on to get their own graphic novel.

She has since written and illustrated several other stories featuring Sandman characters, including one of DC’s hottest books of 2003, the manga, Death: At Death's Door. In 2005, there was The Dead Boy Detectives, based on two minor characters from the story arc, Season of Mists.

Jill also writes and draws her own series, Scary Godmother.

Thompson is a multiple Eisner Award winner. In 2004, she won for Best Painter/Multimedia Artist for her work on The Dark Horse Book of Hauntings and in 2005 for Best Short Story for “Unfamiliar” from The Dark Horse Book of the Dead both written by Evan Dorkin. These Dorkin/Thompson contributions concentrate on a community of canines which includes Whitey, the Jack Russell Terrier…a country cousin of Velcro. :) Beginning in September 2009, Dark Horse will be publishing a 4-issue mini-series entitled Beasts of Burden which will feature these dogs and one cat in their own comic book. They inhabit a place called Burden Hill, hence the title.
