James Hudnall started working in the comics business in 1985 as a marketing person for Eclipse Comics. He became a writer in 1986 with his first comic, Espers. David Lloyd of "V for Vendetta" fame was the artist. From there, he started writing for Marvel and DC. Books such as a run on Strikeforce: Morituri and Alpha Flight for Marvel, Lex Luthor: The Unauthorized Biography followed. He brought Espers over to Marvel/Epic as Interface and also did the Eisner nominated graphic novel, Sinking with Rob Ortaleza. After several prestige series for DC and Marvel like The Psycho, Chiller, Streets and Rick Mason: The Agent. Hudnall worked on Harsh Realm for Harris Comics which was made into a short-lived TV series for Fox.

He then became an Malibu Ultraverse creator, producing such titles as Hardcase, The Squad and The Solution. Following that, Hudnall returned to Espers and self-publishing before becoming part of Image and producing such titles as The Age of Heroes, Devastator and Shut Up and Die.

Hudnall also worked for Viz Comics for 10 years as a rewriter of Japanese manga. When he worked at Eclipse in 1985, he was one of the first people to try to bring Japanese manga to the US and was a fervent promoter of Japanese manga in the comics industry.

In the early 2000s he self published a series called 2 to the Chest as well as wrote the series for Humanoids called Trigs which was published in France. Currently James has finished 2 to the Chest and plans to publish it as a collection. He is also putting together new projects as well as a novel.
