His first comic works were for Power Comics, Noble Comics, Aardvark-Vanaheim, Fantagraphics and Comico. This included the 31-issue Jonny Quest series he wrote and the Journey series he wrote and illustrated.

For DC he wrote many issues of The Flash, Dr. Fate, Wonder Woman, Hawkman and Impulse. During his run on the Wonder Woman series he created the character Artemis of Bana-Mighdall for whom he wrote the mini-series Artemis: Requiem. He also wrote the Jaguar series for DC's Impact Comics Imprint and the "V2K" mini-series Brave Old World for Vertigo.

In 1996 he had a brief run writing Thor for Marvel Comics.

Recently he published works, including an issue of Green Arrow in 2006, several pieces in The Three Tenors for Aardwolf Publishing and a new Journey story for About Comics. He has done writing for Boom! Studios and illustration work for COM Publishing for the 2007 humor book Chicken Wings for the Beer Drinker's Soul as well as collaborative art with Brian Germain on the 2005 fantasy novel Legerdemain. Bill also produces monthly cartoon for the Livingston Parent Journal.

Bill's work with BOOM! Studios includes the titles Necronomicon, Cthulhu Tales, and Zombie Tales.
