Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster originally named it simply "The Mystic Symbol" in the early Dr. Occult stories. He used it similar to how a Crucifix would traditionally be used against Vampires, but changed most likely due to the anti-Semitic connotations.
Later modern stories portrayed it with a more circular disc and was capable of all sorts of magical attacks and defenses usually depending on whatever the story needed.
