From c. 697 to 1797, Venice was the titular capital of the Republic of Venice. Besides territories of Northern Italy, the republic controlled at various times large areas of the Balkans (including much of modern Croatia, Albania and Greece), the entire Cyprus and a number of trading ports in the southern Mediterranean. Most of its holdings were eventually lost to wars with the Ottoman Empire. The Italian territories and Venice itself fell to Revolutionary France in the 1790s. The capture of the city was among the first military victories of Napoleon Bonaparte.
