Originally called the Undertown Bar, the N in the neon sign burned out in the '50s but was never repaired. Until 1972, it was run by Hamsunn, a retired thief, and later it was taken over by Jake "Gnarly" Brown, a former boxer.

The jukebox hasn't changed since the last time I was here. It has not changed at least in eight years. It' the same smoky crooners and depressives that make a dark barroom even darker.

It started as a speakeasy, way back when, but after prohibition, it had never lost its roots. It was also considered a safe zone. Somebody could even find blood enemies side by side at the bar most nights, and only on rare occasions did anything get out of hand.
