South Dakota is the 40th state of the Union, admitted in 1889. It is the 17th largest state but only the 46th most populous. The capital is Pierre, the largest city is Sioux Falls. The most famous tourist destination is Mount Rushmore, because of a monumental granite sculpture by Gutzon Borglum (1867 - 1941). Borglum carved the mountain to feature the heads of four United States Presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson,  Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. The project took twelve years, from 1927 to 1939.  The state is also home to a bike rally in the town of Sturgis.  This is occasionally the setting for comic action.    
 
South Dakota borders North Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota.
