Singapore is an island city state. Founded as a British colony in 1819, it gained its independance in 1963. It had a brief union with Malaysia from 1963 to 1965. Since then it remains firmly independant. While it has a highly developed economy, Singapore is a financial centrel of the World. It is densely populated and the third most expensive city in Asia to settle in. Only Tokyo and Osaka are considered more expensive places to settle. One of the premium harbors in South Asia.

Singapore has sea borders with Malaysia and Indonesia, at the entrance of the Straits of Malacca. Singapore has a "hybrid regime" of democratic and authoritarian elements. While it has several active political parties and holds elections

"free from irregularities and vote rigging", the country has been dominated by the People's Action Party since 1959. Most of the local media are directly or indirectly controlled by the Party and offer positive depictions of its policies. Other points of view simply receive little to no press coverage. On the other hand, the Party is credited with keeping peaceful relations between the various ethnic groups of the city-state.
