Human sacrifice resembles the various practices of ritually slaughtering animals and religious offerings practiced by various cultures throughout history. The victims of such sacrifices were ritually killed in a manner that was supposed to please or appease gods, spirits, the deceased, or as a way for a king's servants to continue to serve their master in the next life. Cannibalism in some tribal societies even served a similar sacrificial purpose.

Black magic rituals also have been known to incorporate human sacrifice in order for its practitioners to acquire great power or favor from an evil god, demon, or other such entity.
