Twin brothers A. Spade and Z. Spade were unethical munitions dealers and saboteurs whose illegal activities were foiled by Captain Triumph.

After the brothers' arrest, A. Spade killed a guard and escaped from prison on the eve of his trial. He captured Captain Triumph's girlfriend Kim Meredith and brutally interrogated her in an attempt to learn Triumph's location, but she refused to talk despite the savage beating. Triumph managed to track down Spade and went to Spade's hideout, using his rarely-utilized illusory powers to disguise himself as Spade's cohort Carim Bombay. The disguised Triumph learned of Spade's plan to destroy several US defense plants with explosive capsules of Spade's own design. Triumph's "undercover" work was spoiled by the arrival of the real Bombay, who shot and killed Spade in order to carry out the plan and reap all the profits himself. Captain Triumph and his sidekick Biff Banks stopped the sabotage and rescued Kim, though Bombay escaped.

The Spade brothers were modeled after actor Sydney Greenstreet, while Carim Bombay was drawn to resemble Greenstreet's frequent co-star Peter Lorre.
