Origin

There is a famous photo of Truman holding up a copy of the Chicago Tribune for the day after the 1948 Election which headline read "Dewey Defeats Truman". The 1948 Presidential Election turned out to be one of the rare upsets in modern Presidential Election history. The polls showed that Dewey would win, but such was not to be the case. A famous campaign slogan developed during Truman's Presidency, reportedly due to the "Do Nothing" Republican Congress. While Truman was campaigning around the country, many of his supporters would shout out to him, "Give 'em hell, Harry".
