The Space Phantoms are the servants of Immortus. For years it was assumed that there was only one Space Phantom, but in the course of the Destiny War the Avengers discovered that more than one Space Phantom existed. During a journey back in time to 1873, a trio of Space Phantoms were caught pretending to be the Gunhawks and the Black Rider.

Immortus traps individuals who become trapped in Limbo and because of the plain and its effects on them they begin to forget the lives they had before and change into beings that are no longer who they used to be. Immortus conditions them into servants who can endure his schemes and manipulations of history and events.

The first Space Phantom first appeared in Avengers copying Giant-Man, Iron Man, and Hulk. During his battle with the Avengers, he attempted to copy Thor and was sent back into Limbo because his powers can not affect Asgardian Gods. The Space Phantom was the cause of misunderstandings between the other Avengers and Hulk which led Hulk to quit the team.

It is noteworthy that apparently a Space Phantom once served as Protector of the Universe.

The original Space Phantom is revealed to be disguised as Spider-Man in the Beyond series.

Creation

Space Phantom was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1963 and first appeared in The Avengers # 2.

POWERS AND ABILITIES

A Space Phantom can assume the form of objects or people, temporarily sending them into limbo until he resumes his natural form or that of another object or person. Assuming the form of certain powerful creatures can result in the Space Phantom being forced back into limbo instead. While in the form of another creature, the Space Phantom gains all the abilities of that person.
