Origin

Of Vietnamese descent, Quicksand was once a scientist working at a nuclear facility when an "accident" transformed her body into a sand-like substance. Petty and selfish, she had a hard time adjusting to her transformation. She called herself Quicksand and attacked the nuclear reactor in rage and in hopes of revenge, hoping to force it to shut down. She was confronted by Thor but nonetheless succeeded in causing the reactor to meltdown. Thor prevented disaster by using his hammer to transport the entire facility to another dimension, and Quicksand escaped.

Creation

Quicksand was created by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz in 1988 and first appeared in Thor # 392.

Story Arcs

She was later contacted by Mongoose, on behalf of Tagar, who desired a cell sample from Thor in order to create a race of gods. She wanted nothing to do with Thor but was persuaded to battle him once Mongoose showed her a device that supposedly would transform her back to normal. Quicksand barely managed to hold her own against Thor, and once Mongoose collected the tissue sample, she escaped once more.

Since then, Quicksand has apparently resigned herself to her transformation, and even, in fact, to revel in the power and profit she has enjoyed as a super-criminal. She served for a time with Superia's Femizons until the organization was shut down by Captain America and Paladin. Later, she somehow came to the attention of the rogue Egyptian god Seth, who dispatched her, Bison, and Mongoose to steal a sample of Inferno-42 from the intelligence agency SHIELD. In the course of this mission, they battled Thunderstrike, SHIELD agent Alex DePaul, and hero-for-hire Luke Cage. During the battle, a conscience-stricken Bison turned on his partners, defeating Quicksand and saving the life of DePaul, who let Bison go free in gratitude.

At some point, she was invited to join the Crimson Cowl's Masters of Evil, and she accepted, hoping to get rich through the Masters' blackmail scheme using global weather control. The team was defeated and apprehended by the Thunderbolts, and Quicksand was among those remanded to custody.

Civil War

During the Civil War , Quicksand would be captured by members of the Thunderbolts. Quicksand registers under the Superhuman Registration Act and joins the Thunderbolts Army. The Thunderbolts had to fight off cities filled with civilians who were suddenly empowered when the Grandmaster opened up the Wellspring of Power. The Thunderbolts army were broken up into numerous squads and sent to various locations throughout the world. The Chicago based squad consisted of Quicksand, Doctor Octopus, X-Ray, Porcupine, Whirlwind and Unicorn. That unit was responsible of maintaining order in the Windy City.

Siege

Norman Osborn was the head of security for the United States and stormed Asgard with his HAMMER Agents, the Dark Avengers and several super powered criminals under his employ including Quicksand. Osborn would send Quicksand and other heavy hitters like Moonstone and the U-Foes to deal with Thor during their initial assault on Asgard. However, Osborn is exposed as a corrupt official and his army is eventually defeated. Quicksand is apprehended and sent to the Raft prison facility.

Fear Itself

Quicksand and other super powered felons would escape from the Raft after a mystic hammer crashes into the prison facility. Steve Rogers informs Giant-Man of the situation and he teleports to Long island with Justice and Quicksilver to help recapture some of the hostiles at large. Quicksand is easily apprehended when Justice contains her inside a psychokinetic force field.

The Unstoppables

Quicksand was in a superhuman prison and being experimented on by The Warden, who was trying to replicate superhuman abilities. When she tried to escape, she was confronted by Juggernaut, who was attempting to be a hero. When he found out what Quicksand was running from, he turned his attention to the Warden, who had become The Human Adaptoid. Quicksand joined Juggernaut's makeshift superteam, The Unstoppables, but The Human Adaptoid was able to absorb her into his own sand-form.

Powers and Abilities

Quicksand is a living elemental of sand. She has superhuman strength and has the ability to manipulate her body in many ways.
