Going full kaiju

After The Jackal got access to the DNA sample library of Mr. Sinister, he combined mutant DNA with human and arachnid DNA to create a whole new clone. It was a confused young girl, who could shapeshift into a giant spider and shoot red optic blasts. In that form, she went on a rampage in New York City getting the attention of the X-Men and The Superior Spider-Man. Spidey put his knowledge of spiders to the test to stun the giant spider. This also cause Gwen to revert to he human form. Using Shi'ar tech, Beast was able to determine her genetic makeup immediately. With evidence that she was at least partially mutant, the X-Men took her back to the Jean Grey Academy.

Gwen Warren made her first appearance in Avenging Spider-Man (2012) #16 by Christopher Yost and Paco Medina, however, she was not named in the book.

In August 2021, a user on Twitter asked Chris Yost, "just wondering did the spider/Cyclops/Gwen Stacy hybrid have a first name?" Chris responded "Everything the Jackal ever created was, in his heart, named Gwen." The twitter user responded once more "Gwen summers [sic] ?" assuming Cyclops was the supplier of the mutant sample (at the time, still unrevealed but implied). Chris responded with the full name: Gwen Warren, presumably taking Jackal's surname.

Ultimatum to Nature Girl
Ultimatum to Nature Girl

Gwen tried her best to fit in at the Jean Grey Academy, but it never worked out. She would leave and tried to make it on her own. While living with two of her friends, Gwen had successfully hidden her mutant abilities from them. One night, they were attacked by snakes and rats, the stress of which caused Gwen to lose control and transform into her spider kaiju form.

This scared her roommates, only to be consoled by Nature Girl. Nature Girl wanted to recruit her to X-Men Green to help her get revenge on Hordeculture. Nature Girl blamed them for her team's recent hardships. Gwen reluctantly agreed, although she was sick of humans and mutants, Nature Girl included, dangling personhood in front of her as a prize for her cooperation.

Unfortunately, Hordeculture was ready for them. They scanned Armageddon Man as he entered and were able to copy his powers. Once properly duplicated, they used his powers to destroy their headquarters and used their Genus Compound to devolve Armageddon Man into a primate ancestor. This forced Nature Girl to open a portal to Santo Marco so they could lie low. However, Nature Girl also grabbed a sample of the Genus Compound and intended to use it until there was no human or mutant left.

Invite to Krakoa

Targeting humans with the Genus Compound was too far for Gwen. She sabotaged Nature Girl's plan by leaving her psi-blocker behind. This allowed Jean Grey to track them and lead the X-Men to their location. With encouragement from Magik, Gwen joined the fight protected citizens. When Jean and Magik had Nature Girl trapped, she desperately tried to talk some sense into her. She was unable to reach Lin before Lin was whisked away by an unseen force.

With X-Men Green done, Gwen accepted the X-Men's invitation back to Krakoa. There, they were able to untangle her messy DNA revealing the three strands Jackal used to create her were: Gwen Stacy (Homo sapien), Spider Queen (Homo insectus), and Scott Summers (Homo superior). Finally finding a family and a home, Gwen was finally able to control her abilities with more precision.

Optic Blasts

Optic Blasts: In addition to the spider characteristics, her five human eyes were capable of shooting red optic blasts.
