Dar-Ben and Ael-Dan together assassinated the current emperor of Kree, Clumsy Foulup. He was only the emperor after a plot of the Contemplator. With what appeared to be the Silver Surfer's help they destroyed him and took command of the Kree Empire.
It all turned out to be a plot by them the whole time. The Surfer was actually a robot they had created.
