Orleans Cooper is actually a demon from the Dark Lands.
Orleans Cooper was a man that owned a jazz club in New Orleans and ran his organization from the Big Easy. Gambit would could back home and gets hired by a beautiful blonde named Lili Penrose to steal a special deck of cards from her uncle, Morgan Penrose. It turns out that the special cards were the Inficio Aquilus tarot cards over seven hundred years old and they possessed vast supernatural powers. Cooper was interested in those cards because he was actually a demon that was exiled from the Dark Lands and had plans to rule the nether realm upon his return. Lili Penrose was in cahoots with Cooper and the two manipulated a thief named Jack Jessup to steal the cards and turn him against Gambit.

Cooper had his right hand man, a mutant named Alphonse who was also a member of the Assassins Guild retrieve the tarot cards from Gambit after he stole them back from Jessup. Gambit and Wolverine came up with a plan and forced Alphonse to take the tarot cards from Cooper and switch them with a fake deck. Cooper had a meeting with elder demons from the Dark Lands and told them his plans to use the tarot cards for himself. The demons got angry by the double-cross but realized that Cooper was vulnerable when the tarot cards he possessed were fake.
