The death of Iphigenia at the hands of Agamemnon is the main reason Clytemnestra swore vengeance on her husband. However, according to another version, Artemis rescued Iphigenia and recruited her as a priestess for her cult at Tauris (Crimea, Ukraine).

Iphigenia was eventually allowed to leave Tauris. But continued to serve as a priestess. Some later traditions claimed that Artemis granted Iphigenia immortality.
