Creation

Flotsam and Jetsam were created by Paul Levitz and Steve Lightle their first appearance was in the Dc Comics series Legion of Super-Heroes Legion of Super-Heroes #14 - Unto the New Generation.

History

Pre-Crisis

The beings going by the moniker Flotsam and Jetsam are alien species called the Skreaks, who resemble small round Earth fish. They are also symbiotic beings having to be near one another to survive, separated for too long and both would perish. They are capable of levitation by their own prowess and are mentioned to have strange innate powers which have never been shown or introduced in any of their appearances.

When the Legion of Super-Heroes were having membership drive and all from around the United Planets galaxies came to Earth to audition. Flotsam and Jetsum were two of those attempting to win entry to the Legion. Although they made it to the finalists the two ultimately were not part of the candidates who succeeded entering the Legion on this round of tryouts.

This did not deter Flotsam and Jetsam from their ambitions, and they soon joined the Legion Academy to better learn how to use their powers.

Five-Year Gap

After the Five-Year Gap run, the legion Academy was closed and funding cut. A short time later a training program by the government was set up and the, the Legion Academy was renamed the United Planets Military Academy. Many old students remained and many new students joined, however Flotsam and Jetsam were not seen again during this time.

Soon after the entire history of Flotsam and Jetsam were wiped out, along with the entire timeline, by the chronal control of Glorith, Mordru, and the Time Trapper.

Powers and Abilities

Flotsam and Jetsam are capable of levitation by their own prowess and are mentioned to have strange innate abilities which have never been shown or introduced in any of their appearances.

Equipment

As cadets of the Legion Academy both Flotsam and Jetsam are allowed the use of a pair of Legion Flight Rings. The ring gives its wearer the ability to fly, the speed and range of which is determined by the wearer's willpower. It also acts as a long-range communicator (enabling constant vocal contact with other Legionnaires, even across vast distances of space), a signal device, and a navigational compass, all powered by a micro-computer built inside the ring. since both Flotsam and Jetsam can levitate under their own powers the rings may add to this ability. It has not been shown how they two "wear" the Flight Rings.
