Dr. Hans Iker was a scientist in the 1940s who created a material in the Fifth Dimension that could create things out a spidery texture that could only be seen through infrared goggles. Using these, he created dwarves and giants to attempt to get back at a science institute that kicked him out for his radical ideas. Rex Tyler, the first Hourman, ultimately defeated him by throwing one of his giants through the infrared machine, causing them to dissentegrate. Iker was driven temporarily mad by the strain of extra-dimensional materials, and had he not been stopped, would have gone permanently mad.
 
Iker did several decades in a federal prison, ultimately being released and obtating a job at Tylerco, Rex Tyler's company. He met with the third Hourman, a robot made with Tyler's genetic material, during a crisis involving Dr. Fate.
