Origin

Not everything listed in the origin is Canon. That is because only television shows and movies are considered canon. This being a comic website there are many things here that are not canon. So unless it is contradicted in film it should be listed as part of the character biography.
Jose was a hot head at Starfleet academy but graduated anyway. He served under Robert April on the U.S.S. Tiberius and the U.S.S. Enterprise. He stayed on the Enterprise as Helmsmen when Christopher Pike became Captain. One day his whole world would change when Mia Colt first came to the Enterprise as Pike's personal Yeoman. She was not on-board long before he fell head over heals in love with her. He perused the relationship hard and won her over enough to start dating each other.
Creation

In the episode Tyler is only referred to by last name however in the it was alway the intention of the character's creator Gene Roddenberry to name him Jose Tyler and it would have likely been his name had he been in later episodes. When his character was taken for the comic there was at least some consideration to make his name Erik Kohl but for what ever reason the best decision was made to keep true to Roddenberry's intention and keep his name Jose Tyler.
